A Lesson before Dying has been adapted for the stage by Romulus Linney from the award winning novel by Ernest J. Gaines.   Set in the segregated society of Louisiana in 1948, Jefferson, an innocent young black man, awaits execution for the death of a white man.  His elderly godmother asks a plantation school teacher, who questions his own self-worth, to confront the willful convict in the hope of helping him to die like a man.  However, it is the lessons the teacher learns from the condemned man that succeed in exposing purpose in his own life.

Fourth of July  Celebration on the Neches  River offers a rollicking salute to our nation's past with events that include local musical groups performing in the park.  The Symphony of Southeast Texas will also perform at the Julie Rogers Theatre.  Enjoy the music and the air condition of the orchestra beginning at 8 pm.  At 9 p.m. fireworks explode in the sky while the explosive and dramatic delight to eye and ear continues for about 30 minutes. Food and beverage booths are set up only in the park.
