I-10 and the Beaumont interchange

Interstate 10 carries the Gulf Coast's east-west traffic straight through Beaumont, crossing the US 69 and 96 and 287 corridor at a major interchange that TxDOT is now rebuilding. Here is how it fits together, and where the official project and live-traffic pages are.

The corridor

I-10 runs east to west across southern Beaumont, linking Houston to the west with Louisiana to the east. Within the city it meets the north-south route carried by US 69, US 96, and US 287, the corridor known locally as the Eastex Freeway on one leg and Cardinal Drive on another. That meeting point is the Beaumont interchange, and it is one of the busiest freight and commuter junctions in Southeast Texas.

The rebuild

TxDOT is carrying out a large set of improvements at the interchange, described on its project page as the 10/69 Interchange Projects and split into two major contracts, the Cardinal Drive and Eastex interchange work. The program widens the main lanes, reworks ramps and interchange approaches, and adds frontage-road capacity. TxDOT's published cost is in the hundreds of millions of dollars per contract, and the agency has pointed to completion around the turn of the decade.
